Many AI chat assistants can now make an image from a text description, and free editors can touch it up afterwards. A few simple rules keep you safe and fair to other people.

Free tools

  • Image features in free AI assistants. Some assistants include image creation on their free plans. For example, OpenAI’s ChatGPT Free Tier FAQ lists creating images, and Google’s Gemini plans page lists image generation and editing on its free plan. Free limits are lower and change often, so check the official page.
  • Free editors for the finishing touches. GIMP, Krita and Photopea are covered in free alternatives to Adobe Photoshop.

Describe what you want

Image tools respond to a clear description: the scene, the style, the colors or mood, and anything to leave out. Change one detail at a time until it looks right. For more on asking clearly, see Write better prompts.

Check what you’re allowed to do

Before you use an AI image for a business, a product or anything you sell, read that tool’s own terms. They say who may use the images and for what. If the terms aren’t clear to you, don’t use the image commercially.

Never upload

  • photos of other people without their permission, especially children
  • images meant to embarrass, imitate or deceive anyone
  • other people’s artwork or logos to copy their work for profit

Fake images of real people can cause real harm, and they’re used in scams. For the warning signs, see How to spot a legit AI deal vs a scam.

Keep your own photos private too

Photos can show more than you think: faces, addresses, number plates, documents on a desk. Crop or blur anything private before you upload, and read Keep your personal info out of AI chats.

Try it

Describe a simple scene with no real people, such as “a cozy reading corner with a cat, watercolor style, soft morning light”, in a free assistant. Then change one detail at a time: the style, the time of day or the colors.

The short version

Use free tools, describe the scene clearly, check the terms before any commercial use, and never upload someone else’s photo without permission.
