Which AI subscription is worth it?
Most big AI chat apps offer a free plan and one or more paid plans. Whether paying is worth it depends on what you actually do with it. This guide helps you decide. We don’t list prices here because they change often; check the official pages linked below on the day you decide.

1. Start with what you’d use it for
Write down the two or three things you’d use AI for every week, such as writing emails, studying, summarizing documents, or help with code. If you can’t name regular tasks, you probably don’t need a paid plan yet.
2. Use the free tier first
Every major provider listed below has a free tier. Use it for a week or two on your real tasks. Pay only if you keep hitting a limit that matters to you, for example:
- you regularly run out of messages (rate limits),
- you need a more capable model that’s only on paid plans,
- you need features like longer documents (a bigger context window), file uploads, image tools, or voice.
If you’re not hitting limits, the free plan is doing its job.
3. Compare plans on the official pages only
Plans, limits, and prices change often and differ by country. Always check the provider’s own page:
- ChatGPT (OpenAI): chatgpt.com/pricing
- Claude (Anthropic): claude.com/pricing
- Gemini (Google): gemini.google/subscriptions
- Grok (xAI): grok.com/plans
- Mistral Vibe, formerly Le Chat (Mistral): mistral.ai/pricing

4. Monthly or annual?
- Monthly costs more over a year but lets you stop any month. It’s the safer choice while you’re still deciding, or if better options keep appearing.
- Annual is usually cheaper per month, but you pay up front and are committed. Choose it only after you’ve used the service for a while and are sure you’ll keep using it.
5. Check how to cancel, before you pay
- Find the cancel option in the account settings and note when your plan renews.
- Check whether you subscribed through the website or through an app store; you usually cancel in the same place you paid.
- Set a calendar reminder a few days before any free trial or renewal ends.
6. Look at the data and privacy settings
Before you rely on any plan, open its settings and check:
- whether your chats may be used to train future models, and how to turn that off,
- how to delete your history,
- what happens to your data if you cancel.
Paying doesn’t automatically mean more privacy. Read the settings for the plan you choose. Our guide Using free AI models safely covers the basics.
7. Personal or team plan?
- Personal plans are for one person. Sharing a login usually breaks the provider’s terms and can get the account suspended.
- Team or business plans add things like central billing, admin controls, and different data-handling terms. If you use AI for work with customer or company information, ask your employer which tool is approved before using a personal account.
8. Re-check every few months
Free plans get better, prices change, and new models arrive. Every few months, ask: am I still hitting the limits that made me pay? If not, step back down to the free plan.
The short version
Start free. Pay only for a limit you keep hitting. Choose monthly until you’re sure. Check how to cancel and how your data is used, on the provider’s official page.
