Free alternatives to ChatGPT Plus

Updated 4 min read

ChatGPT Plus is OpenAI’s paid personal plan for ChatGPT. It gives you more usage and access to features that the free plan limits.

What it costs

We couldn’t read the price automatically from OpenAI’s official page, so we don’t state a number here. See the official pricing page: chatgpt.com/pricing (checked October 22, 2026). Prices can differ by country and change over time.

Free alternatives

  • ChatGPT’s free plan. OpenAI lists a free plan on the same pricing page. Try it first; for occasional use it may be all you need. chatgpt.com
  • Claude (free plan), by Anthropic. Anthropic’s pricing page lists a Free plan at $0, “free for everyone,” with lower usage than its paid plans. claude.com
  • Gemini (free), by Google. Google’s subscriptions page describes a free level of Gemini, with paid plans offering higher usage and more features. gemini.google.com

All three are free tiers of paid services, so each has usage limits (rate limits) that can change. See our guide on using free AI models safely before you paste in anything private.

Honest trade-offs

  • Free plans usually have lower usage limits and may not include the newest or most capable models.
  • Some features (for example, larger file uploads or advanced tools) may be limited to paid plans. Check each provider’s page for the current list.
  • Switching between several free apps works, but your chat history and settings stay separate in each one.

Who should still pay

If you use ChatGPT every day for work or study, keep hitting the free plan’s limits, or rely on a feature that’s only on Plus, paying is reasonable. Our guide Which AI subscription is worth it? walks through the decision.
