Free alternatives to Microsoft 365 Copilot

Updated 4 min read

Microsoft 365 Copilot is an add-on for Microsoft 365 that brings an AI assistant into apps like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams, using your organization’s work data.

What it costs

We couldn’t verify a complete price from Microsoft’s official page with automated checks, so we don’t state a number here. See the official page: Microsoft 365 Copilot pricing (checked October 22, 2026). Pricing differs for business and enterprise customers, and by country.

Free alternatives

  • Microsoft Copilot Chat (if your work already has Microsoft 365). Microsoft’s official page says Copilot Chat is available at no additional cost for Microsoft Entra account users with an eligible Microsoft 365 subscription. It’s an AI chat with web information and file uploads (limits apply), but it doesn’t have the full Copilot license’s deep access to your work content. Ask your IT team whether it’s turned on. • LibreOffice, for the office apps themselves. A free, open-source office suite (documents, spreadsheets, presentations) that’s actively maintained. It doesn’t include a built-in AI assistant. libreoffice.org
  • A free AI chat app, for drafting and summarizing. The free plans of reputable AI chat apps can help write, summarize, and explain. See free alternatives to ChatGPT Plus.

Honest trade-offs

  • A separate chat app can’t see your email, calendar, or files the way Copilot can inside Microsoft 365. You’d copy and paste, which is slower.
  • Never paste confidential work information into a personal AI account. Ask your employer which tools are approved.
  • LibreOffice opens and saves Microsoft Office formats, but complex documents may not look exactly the same.

Who should still pay

Organizations that already run on Microsoft 365 and want AI that works across their own email, meetings, and documents, with their existing security and admin controls, are who Copilot is built for. That decision usually belongs to your IT team, not individuals.
