Free vs paid AI: what you actually get
Most AI chat apps have a free plan and one or more paid plans. This guide lists what each plan includes in six areas: model access, usage limits, file uploads, voice and image tools, data and privacy controls, and team features.
Everything below comes from the vendor’s own plan or help pages, linked in each section and checked on October 22, 2026. Plans change often and differ by country. If we couldn’t read a page with an automated check, we don’t repeat anything from it; we just say “see the official page”. We only give a price if it was on the official page when we checked, and prices shown are from the US pages, before tax.

What to compare
- Model access. Free plans often use a smaller or faster model. Paid plans add more capable ones.
- Usage limits. Every plan has rate limits. Paid plans raise them; none is truly unlimited.
- File uploads. Free plans usually allow uploads, with lower limits. How much a model can read at once depends on its context window.
- Voice and image tools. Often included for free, with tighter limits.
- Data and privacy. Check whether your chats can be used for training and how to opt out. Paying doesn’t automatically mean more privacy.
- Team features. Shared workspaces, single sign-on (SSO), central billing and admin controls are usually on business plans only.
ChatGPT (OpenAI)
- Free: OpenAI’s help page says everyday text chats are unlimited, subject to abuse-prevention safeguards. File and image uploads, image creation, voice and data analysis have their own, separate limits. Free users can search the web, upload images and files, use existing GPTs, create images, and store files in a Library with 500 MB of storage. The default free model and its limits can change. Ads may appear on the free plan in some countries.
- Paid: the help page says ChatGPT Plus has higher rate limits. OpenAI also lists Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces for teams. For paid plan details and prices, see the official page; it blocked our automated check.

So, is paid worth it?
For many people, a free plan covers occasional writing, questions and summaries. Paying makes sense when you keep hitting a limit that matters to you: the message cap, the model, file sizes, or a team feature. Our guide Which AI subscription is worth it? walks through that decision step by step. For any unfamiliar term, see the AI glossary.
